'ESG in the Default' is everything you need to begin your journey into the exciting world of responsible investment. We demystify this often confusing sector of the pensions industry that has seen a significant rise to prominence over recent years; a rise that has been reflected in the changing attitudes of pension savers as well as an increase in regulations and legislation.

'ESG', has become the colloquial term for environmental, social and governance factors that are increasingly being used to assess and measure the sustainability and societal impact of an investment. Without a solid understanding of the basics of 'ESG', this sector can be incredibly overwhelming, especially when combined with the growing amount of biased and misleading information from product providers and the extra layer of complexity that it adds to your fiduciary duties.

This is why Compass Courses has designed this programme; to give pension fund trustees the confidence and knowledge they need to make choices and decisions from a place of complete clarity, so that they can more effectively collaborate with advisors, communicate with consultants, mandate asset managers and engage with their members.

This course has been designed to take you through the entire process from end-to-end, with approximately six-months worth of practical guidance and advice broken down into six bitesize, manageable modules. Our graphics, statistics and useful on-screen data have been designed specifically to be informative and engaging, helping you to learn quickly and effectively; and we have included a host of downloadable documents and resources to supplement the video content, which means you have access to essential information whilst offline.

My own journey to integrating ESG into the default investment strategy was a period that took over two years. Why is integrating ESG important? It is simply the best way to manage your financially material risks, such as climate change, and it allows you to adopt a more progressive responsible investment strategy leading to positive environmental and social impact. This in turn helps to keep members invested in the default option delivering the best outcomes for their retirement.

This course contains key elements of my own learning, and provides a roadmap to integrate ESG.  Armed with this information, you’ll be able to reduce your governance costs and achieve your own journey much sooner.

I endorse this course and encourage you to start as soon as possible!

The first chapter focuses on the definition of ESG, responsible investment, the Spectrum of Capital and why it’s all relevant to your DC Pension Scheme.

Module 2 : Understanding your Fiduciary Duty

Chapter 2 is delivered with the help of our legal expert, Stuart O’Brien, Partner at Sackers, one of the UK’s leading pensions law firms.

Module 3: Responsible Investor Beliefs

Chapter 3 will take you through a three-stage step-by-step process of how to organise and facilitate your own responsible investor beliefs workshop or meeting.

Module 4: ESG Integration in Practice

This chapter is all about the implementation. We’ll show you how ESG integration looks in practice by sharing some live case studies from leading schemes.

Module 5: Engagement

The penultimate chapter deals with the all-important area of engagement. This goes beyond simply engaging with your fund managers and investee companies, and into creating effective communication strategies with your members and other public stakeholders.

Module 6: How to Use Your ESG Integration Strategy as a Powerful Engagement Tool

The final chapter is about engaging your members using your investment strategy. Research shows us that savers want to know more about their pension, but are often confused about where to start and overwhelmed with the complexity.
